class="wp-block-paragraph">Somewhere in the details of your broadband package, there is a second speed. It’s usually a fraction of the one on the billboard, it rarely appears in a comparison table, and it’s the number that decides whether working from home feels smooth or faintly humiliating.

Download speed is what gets sold, because download speed is what streaming needs, and streaming is what most households did most of with their connection for about fifteen years. That stopped being the whole picture a while ago.

Why the Big Number Is the Download Number

Advertising follows demand, and for a long time demand really was one-directional. Watching, browsing and scrolling all pull data towards you. A household of four streaming in the evening is doing almost nothing upstream beyond acknowledging that the video arrived.

So packages got named after their download figure, comparison tables sorted by it, and upload speed drifted into the technical specification where nobody reads it. The habit outlasted the reason.

Built to Be Uneven

Part-fibre connections, where fibre reaches a street cabinet, and copper covers the last stretch to your house, are asymmetric by design. The available capacity is divided unevenly on the assumption that you want far more coming in than going out, and on a typical package the upstream figure lands somewhere around a quarter of the headline speed or less.

Cable connections are often more lopsided still relative to their download headline, for similar historical reasons. Full fibre to the premises can carry a great deal more upstream, and some packages are close to symmetric, but plenty of consumer full-fibre deals are still deliberately unbalanced. The technology allows it; the tariff decides.

This matters because the fix is not always “buy a faster package”. Buying a bigger download number on the same underlying technology can leave your upload essentially where it was.

What Actually Goes Up

Rather more than people assume. Cloud photo and file backup, which runs constantly and quietly. Video calls, which need a steady couple of megabits each way and are far more sensitive to interruption than to raw speed. Sending work files. Anything with a shared drive. Home security cameras, which upload all day whether anyone is watching or not. Console game uploads and streaming, if that’s your household.

And increasingly, creative work, which is where the arithmetic gets strange.

The Lopsided Case

Few things a household does are as uneven as an ai video generator: a couple of hundred characters of prompt travel up the line, and a file hundreds of megabytes wide comes back down. If you’re animating your own still image rather than working from text alone, the picture goes up too, and every revision repeats the round trip.

That pattern is worth understanding because it’s the shape of most cloud creative work now. The processing happens on somebody else’s hardware, which means your connection is doing the fetching and carrying rather than your computer doing the work. Generated clips then get pulled into an edit, and the finished export goes back out to a client, a platform or a shared drive, which is when the upstream figure suddenly becomes the only number that matters.

Half an hour of that will move more data out of a house than a month of email.

Latency Is the Other Missing Number

Speed is not the same as responsiveness, and for calls the second one matters more. A connection can post a respectable download figure and still make you sound like you’re broadcasting from a submarine, because what ruins a call is delay and variability rather than throughput.

Latency also degrades under load in a way that catches people out. Saturate your upstream with a large file transfer and everything else on the connection gets slower to respond, including the download side, which is why a video call falls apart the moment somebody starts a backup.

One Person Uploading Ruins It For Everyone

That’s the practical household version. Upload capacity is small enough that a single sustained transfer can consume most of it, and unlike downloads, there’s very little headroom to absorb the collision.

If two people in your house work from home, or one works from home while a camera uploads continuously, you are sharing a resource considerably scarcer than the one in the advert.

How to Find Out What You’ve Actually Got

Run a speed test and write down the upload figure, not just the download one. Do it twice: once at nine in the morning and once at eight in the evening.

Look up the technology behind your line rather than the package name. Part-fibre, cable and full fibre behave differently upstream.

Check your contract or order confirmation for the minimum guaranteed speed you were given at the point of sale.

Start a large cloud upload, then run a speed test while it’s going. That figure is what your household actually experiences during a working day.

The gap between the first and last of those is usually the source of the complaint.

The Guarantee Only Covers One Direction

There is a genuine consumer protection here, and its shape is instructive. The voluntary broadband speed codes that Ofcom oversees require a signatory provider to give you a minimum guaranteed speed before you buy, and if your speed falls below it and the provider cannot resolve the problem within 30 days of you reporting it, you can exit the contract without penalty. Since updates that came into force in December 2022, that right extends to bundled services too, so you’re not left able to cancel the broadband while still paying for the TV package attached to it.

Now read it again with upload in mind. The guarantee, and the right to exit that hangs off it, are framed around download speed. Your upstream carries no equivalent promise, which means a connection can be technically compliant, contractually sound and still useless for the thing you actually need it for.

Two caveats worth knowing. The codes are voluntary, so the protection depends on your provider having signed up, and the details sit in your own contract rather than in the marketing.

What to Compare If You Work With Big Files

Sort by upload where you can, and where a comparison tool won’t let you, open the specification and find the figure yourself. Treat full fibre availability at your address as the question that matters most, because it’s the only route to a genuinely large upstream. Weigh a symmetric or high-upload package against a faster download you probably won’t notice.

And be honest about your household rather than your aspirations. If nobody uploads anything larger than a photo, none of this applies to you, and you should buy on price.

Ask For the Second Number

When you next talk to a provider, or work through a comparison, ask one specific question: what is the guaranteed upload speed at this address, on this package? Not the estimate, not the range, and not the download equivalent.

The answer takes ten seconds to give and tells you more about how the connection will feel than the number on the front of the deal ever will.
